Peacock Kolam rangoli

Easy dot rangoli design #22: an 11×11 grid of dots, 61 of them coloured, with four lines of symmetry. Good for a doorstep, a Diwali corner or a school competition.

What you need

Mark an 11×11 grid of dots with chalk, about 4 to 5 cm apart for a doorstep. Then you'll fill:

Use rangoli powder, coloured rice, flower petals or diyas for the dots. The white stars look best in rice flour or chalk.

Step by step

Work outwards from the centre, one square ring at a time. Every ring is the same on all four sides, so finish one side and copy it to the other three.

  1. Step 1 · centre

Put one white dot in the very centre. Everything else grows out from here.

  2. Step 2 · ring 1

Ring 1 is the square of 8 dots touching the centre. Place 8 pink dots. Start with the middle dot of each side, in line with the centre.

  3. Step 3 · ring 2

Place 16 dots: 8 marigold and 8 white. Start with the middle dot of each side, in line with the centre, in marigold. The four corners of this ring are marigold. Then fill in each side so it mirrors the others.

  4. Step 4 · ring 3

Place 8 marigold dots. Start with the middle dot of each side, in line with the centre.

  5. Step 5 · ring 4

Place 24 dots: 16 peacock blue and 8 pink. Start with the middle dot of each side, in line with the centre, in peacock blue. The four corners of this ring are peacock blue. Then fill in each side so it mirrors the others.

  6. Step 6 · ring 5

Place just four peacock blue dots, one on each corner of the ring.
