Any amount in words, the Indian way

Type a number, or something like 1.5 crore or 2 million. Get the words for a cheque and every lakh, crore and million conversion.

Try

Lakh, crore, million and billion

India groups digits differently. After the first thousand, commas come every two digits: 1,00,000 is one lakh and 1,00,00,000 is one crore. The international system puts a comma every three digits: 100,000 and 10,000,000.

IndianDigitsInternational
1 thousand1,0001 thousand
1 lakh1,00,000100 thousand
10 lakh10,00,0001 million
1 crore1,00,00,00010 million
10 crore10,00,00,000100 million
100 crore1,00,00,00,0001 billion
1 lakh crore10,00,00,00,00,0001 trillion

Two shortcuts cover most conversions: 1 million = 10 lakh and 1 crore = 10 million. So to turn crore into million, multiply by 10; to turn million into lakh, multiply by 10.

Questions

Should I write "lakh" or "lakhs"?

Banks accept both, but the usual style on cheques is singular: "Rupees Five Lakh Only", the same way you'd write "five thousand", not "five thousands".

Do I need "and" between the words?

No. Indian cheques usually skip "and" except before paise: "Rupees One Hundred Five and Fifty Paise Only".

What comes after crore?

In everyday use, people keep counting in crore: 100 crore, 1,000 crore, 1 lakh crore. Older words like arab (100 crore) and kharab (100 arab) exist but aren't used on cheques or in news.

Does Ginti store what I type?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
