Chhutta – the exact change game

You run the shop counter. Give every customer exact change, fast, with as few notes and coins as you can.

10 customers are waiting

Work out the change, tap the notes and coins to hand it back. The clock starts when you open the shop.

How to play Chhutta

  1. Read the bill. A customer buys something and pays with a note, say ₹200 for a ₹137 item.
  2. Work out the change. ₹200 − ₹137 = ₹63.
  3. Tap notes and coins from the cash drawer to hand it back: ₹50 + ₹10 + ₹2 + ₹1. Tap something in the tray to take it back.
  4. Exact amount, next customer. As soon as the tray matches, the next customer steps up.

Serve all 10 customers. Your score is your time. Every extra note or coin over the fewest possible adds 2 seconds, so ₹20 + ₹20 + ₹20 + ₹2 + ₹1 for ₹63 costs you 2 seconds compared with ₹50 + ₹10 + ₹2 + ₹1.

Know your notes

The cash drawer uses the colours of the current Mahatma Gandhi New Series notes, so you learn to grab them by colour like a real shopkeeper.

NoteColour
₹500Stone grey
₹200Bright yellow
₹100Lavender
₹50Fluorescent blue
₹20Greenish yellow
₹10Chocolate brown

Tips for faster change

  • Count up, don't subtract. For ₹137 paid with ₹200, count up from 137: +3 makes 140, +60 makes 200. So the change is ₹63.
  • Biggest first. Always grab the largest note that still fits, then the next. With rupee notes and coins, this always gives the fewest pieces.
  • Watch for ₹2 + ₹2. ₹4 is two ₹2 coins, but ₹3 is ₹2 + ₹1 and ₹9 is ₹5 + ₹2 + ₹2.

For parents and teachers

Chhutta is a quick way to practise subtraction, place value and money handling with real Indian currency. It fits Class 2 to Class 5 maths topics on money. Practice mode has unlimited rounds and doesn't affect the daily score.

Why is there no ₹2000 note?

The RBI withdrew the ₹2000 note from circulation in 2023, so it isn't in the drawer.
