How to play Hop Pond
- The frog sits on a lily pad with a number. The fly is on another pad.
- Tap a jump, like +3 or −1, and the frog hops that many pads along the number line.
- Land exactly on the fly to catch it. If you go too far, hop back.
- Catch it in the fewest hops for three stars. Watch out for water: the frog can’t land where there’s no lily pad.
What it teaches
Every hop is a sum. When the frog goes from 4 with a +3 jump, the game writes 4 + 3 = 7 under the pond, so children see adding as moving right and taking away as moving left. Looking for the fewest hops makes them plan ahead: is it quicker to jump past and hop back? That’s the start of mental maths and number sense.
