How your speed is worked out

  • One word = 5 characters, spaces included. This is the standard used by typing tests everywhere, so long and short words even out.
  • Gross WPM is everything you typed, divided by 5, per minute.
  • Net WPM, the big number, takes off one word per minute for every mistake you left uncorrected.
  • Accuracy is the share of characters that match the passage.
  • Key depressions per hour (KDPH) counts every key you pressed, backspaces included, as if you kept going for an hour. Data entry tests often use it.

Exam mode

Government typing tests in India are usually typed from a printed or on-screen passage, often without the backspace key. Turn on Exam mode to practise the same way: backspace is switched off, so every slip counts, and a 10 or 15 minute test builds the stamina those tests need.

Speed (net WPM)What it means
Under 25Still looking at the keys. Practise accuracy first.
25 to 35Near the level many government typing tests ask for in English.
35 to 50Comfortable for office work and most typing tests.
50 to 70Fast. Good for data entry and transcription jobs.
Over 70Professional speed.

Exact rules and speeds differ between exams and change from year to year, so always check the official notice for your exam.

How to type faster

  1. Keep your fingers on the home row: ASDF and JKL;. The bumps on F and J are there to help you find it without looking.
  2. Go for accuracy first. Speed follows on its own; fixing mistakes is what slows people down.
  3. Don't look at the keyboard, even when it feels slower. It pays back within a couple of weeks.
  4. Practise a little every day. Ten focused minutes beat an hour once a week.

Questions

Why does the passage change every day?

So you can't memorise it. Everyone gets the same passage on the same day, which makes it fair to compare speeds with friends. Tap New passage for a different one any time.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, but typing tests are meant for a physical keyboard, so your phone speed will be lower. For exam practice, use a laptop or desktop.

Is my typing saved anywhere?

Only your best speeds, and only on this device. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
